Over the weekend

A few stories managed to slip through the cracks while I was away this weekend. I thought I’d give my take on those stories.

Story 1: Professional Outrage Maven Bill Dono-spew calls for the head of “Chocolate Jesus” creator

This is just nuts. But then, that’s always been a hallmark of Donohue’s particular brand of wingnuttery, hasn’t it? What’s worse, the hotel that had initally agreed to display Cosimo Cavallaro’s work gave in to the bully-boy tactics of Donohue and his professional hit squad. Score another one for the Catholic League’s “Victory Through Intimidation” tactics.

But that’s not enough for Mr. Dono-spew, is it? Oh no. He has to go onto Anderson Cooper’s show on CNN and practically threaten to rip off Cavallaro’s head and break his (middle) finger. This after Cavallaro and the hotel where the art was to be displayed received numerous death threats from those oh-so-loving-and-nonviolent conservative Christians.

La Cosa Nostra are a bunch of pikers compared to the “Theocracy NOW!” crowd.

Seriously, Bill. What is it about this particular Confectionary Christ (as opposed to others that have gone before) that so chaps your ass? Is it the fact that the chocolate more accurately reflects the skin tone of Jesus, a Palestinian Jew, than traditional art has done to date? Or is it the fact that, in accordance with Christian doctrine that Jesus was both fully human and fully divine, he has a fully functional winky?

Story 2: SCOTUS to EPA: Get on with your work, Cratchit!

Well, well, well. This is an unexpected piece of good news, given that it comes from a SCOTUS that Bush just got finished stacking with wingnuts back in ‘05. It seems that a Bush crony-stacked EPA had been struck with the “blue flu” when it came to enforcing the Clean Air Act’s provisions regarding vehicle emissions, to which the Supremes applied a real-life version of “The Rush Act” (which, incidentally, was named for Pillz-E) and forced them back to work protecting the environment, rather than undermining it.

Story 3: Sen. John McCain: Lying? Or Stupid?

You make the call. Personally, I have a hard time deciding.

The Best of the Rest of the Internets

Monty Python’s Terry Jones dissects Britain’s Iran Hostage Crisis™ with surgical (and humorous) precision.

Robert Farley at Lawyers, Guns and Money comments on an article in Jane’s Defence Weekly about the Tamil Tigers’ recent upgrade to air power.

CPAC’s Beefcake Marine may be in trouble for more than just gay pr0n.

Finally, Phoenix Woman at Firedoglake provides a what if scenario of what might have unfolded had SCOTUS not overturned the will of the people back in 2000 (if Gore had played his hand smartly). ‘Tis a thing of beauty.
