Shadenfreude
Going into the Iraq war all those years ago, do your remember how every single right-winger would constantly call anyone who balked at worshipping the ground The Anointed One walked on a traitor? Remember how, in recent months, we’ve been getting a constant bleat of “if we leave Iraq, they’ll follow us home?” (As if the terrorists don’t have MapQuest or Google Earth™.) Well, turns out that us dirty fucking hippies were right all along - Iraq has distracted us from the real war against Al Qaeda long enough for them to recover to pre-9/11 strength.
In other words, we made the same mistake Hitler did in the Battle of Britain when he stopped trying to pimp-slap the RAF in favor of blitzing civilian targets.
