Stylin’ and Profilin’ in ‘08

I know I recently praised GOP Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee for having more cultural acumen than the average politician - even if it was a backhanded compliment. But I have no words to describe his latest endorsement, from one “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. I’ll leave clever comment to the fine folks at Sadly, No!

As for Flair, well, once a heel, always a heel, I guess.

WOOOOOO!

Uniquely American

Well, I’m off to San Angelo for Thanksgiving again. Posting will be erratic to nonexistent. Then again, how is that different from the rest of this month?

I was rather amused when I read that John Aravosis’ computer thinks he’s French. Especially considering something I noticed recently with my copy of MS Word 2003. It seems to think I’m Canadian.

No, seriously. Every time I fire the damn fool thing up, the spellchecker defaults to “English (Canada),” and all efforts to change it back to “English (U.S.)” are ineffectual. It didn’t do this before - only in the last month or so. So if I suddenly start inserting extra “u”s into words that shouldn’t have them, you’ll know why…

Maybe I should just tell my computer to take off, eh?

Chuck Norris’ tears can cure cancer. Too bad Chuck Norris has never cried.

Say what you will about Mike Huckabee’s politics and proposed policies, you gotta give him props for having the cultural acumen required to turn an Internet phenomenon into a plea for votes. Even if, as one commenter at Pandagon put it:

We’re not laughing with him, we’re laughing at him.

Indeed.

The Conservatives’ War on Thanksgiving

in Religious Thuggery; Local Wingnuttery; Our Dying Democracy

File this under “Only In America” - an imam leads a service in a Jewish synagogue - a service that is attended by Christian faithful. On a Sunday, no less. The service is in celebration of that uniquely American holiday - Thanksgiving. It is perhaps the most beautiful expression of the American Melting Pot™ made manifest - a celebration of the common threads that bind us together, no matter how diverse our origins. A shining example of what religious freedom, protected by a strict separation between church and state, can bring in our multicultural society.

Would that the site choice had been by design, rather than necessity. You see, the original location where the service was scheduled to be held, a certain conservative baptist church that shall remain nameless, had said “Okay, we’ll take the [racial slur for blacks] and the [racial slur for Jews], but we don’t want the [racial slur for Arabs]!” Fortunately for all involved, a local synagogue stepped up to the plate. That the mere presence of Muslims would nearly scuttle a planned celebration of what it means to be American at this festive time of year speaks poorly of those who believe that the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim. As one person interviewed for the story put it:

To me, this was the biggest slap in the face to the whole idea of this celebration. One congregation’s decision wasn’t a very charitable or Christian gesture.

Not very charitable or Christian. Sounds like the perfect description of a church that thinks hating Muslims is one of its “Core Values.”

Lady, Your Box IS Just a Box To Me*

Wow. They’re not bothering to hide their misogyny anymore, are they?

Just…WOW.

I have no words. You wanna try, Jessica? Bean?

Maybe the Forced Pregnancy Brigade should spend their time on more important matters - like making up inane elementary school rhymes to insulate themselves from “slut cooties.”

* With apologies to the very talented women who made the “My Box in a Box” song on YouTube.

Where Irony Goes To Die

Yesterday’s Drunk Duck:

The irony is that Bruce Tinsley couldn’t be funny even WITH a team of writers.

Come to think of it, we’ve seen a sample of what Bruce Tinsley’s “humor” would look like with a team of writers. It was called The Half Hour News Hour.

‘Nuff said.

Behind the Times: Only Liberals are Vulgar, Indeed.

McCain townhall attendee refers to Sen. Clinton as "the bitch," McCain tries to laugh it off.

But wait, it gets better! After hearing wingnuts defend McCain’s reaction to the remark, McCain tries to use it as a fundraising tool - the swipe at CNN is just gravy.

You see, he was for civility in politics before he was against it. Only now he’s for it again:

I don’t think you should take shots at her, like imitating her voice,” Mr. McCain said during a discussion on his bus, referring to something Mr. Giuliani has done at campaign appearances. “I don’t know what you gain by doing that. I guess issuing inflammatory statements can be effective. But I can’t campaign that way.

As to his reluctance to attack Mrs. Clinton with the same relish as Mr. Giuliani, Mr. McCain said: “You can be tough, but you should never degrade or ridicule anyone who is seeking public office. But we see too much of it.”

Guess it’s time for a campaign ethics panelemoticonemoticonemoticon

Behind the Times: One in Four Homeless are Vets

in Adults in Charge?; WHO Hates the Troops?

Apparently, treating the troops like human beings if they’re lucky enough to survive being put in harm’s way in the furtherance of the Quixotic pursuits of the armchair quarterbacks who run the GOP is an evil “librul” entitlement that must be destroyed ASAP.

Meanwhile, to add insult to injury, Commander Codpiece couldn’t be bothered to attend the traditional laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns on Veterans’ Day, preferring instead to play the well-worn fear card in a speech to that domestic terrorist group, the American Legion.

And as if that wasn’t enough, anti-war veterans were denied permission to march in a Veterans’ Day parade in Boston. The response of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders? Calling them “unhinged,” among other things. Oh, and the Boston event wasn’t the only Veterans’ Day celebration at which anti-war vets were personas non grata, either. Not by a long shot.

“Libruls” hate the troops, indeed.

Behind the Times: KO’d again

Or not.

*Sigh*

How did I get in a party of spineless wimps, anyway?
