There Will Be Ben Sargent’s Blood

May I play a brief game of “Democrats Eating Their Own” real quick? There’s been a bit of a ruckus at the local fishwrap recently over a Ben Sargent cartoon depicting Sen. Clinton as Daniel Day-Lewis’ character in There Will Be Blood.

While supporters of the junior senator were quick to criticize Sargent’s caricature, all of the criticisms that were printed were disturbingly fact-free. One claimed Sargent was “depicting Clinton as a crazed Nazi thug,” while another saw not a cheesy movie reference, but “an evil-looking hag” and a third likened the cartoon image to a “witch.” I wonder how many of these letter-writers bothered to look at the title of the movie being referenced (it couldn’t have been more obvious). I also wonder how many of these letter-writers took the time to notice that the words Sargent put into Sen. Clinton’s mouth were actually a quote from the movie. Would these same outraged citizens have understood the reference if the speech bubble had read “I drink Obama’s milkshake!”, or would they still be deliberately dense?

  1. Seriously, I think people just want something to complain about. I haven’t watched the movie at all, but I instantly recognized the reference. It’s really a no-brainer…
