So, yeah… About Michelle Malkin…
It seems that I was a bit hasty in my assessment of her earlier comments. In spite of being told that “counter-insurgency” doesn’t mean what she thinks it means, she keeps using it to describe the Teabagging Brownshirt movement.
What this suggests to me is that far from being outright stupid, Malkin is being mendacious. She truly believes that in spite of the drubbing her party took in the election last year, Obama is ineligible to rule simply by virtue of his being a Democrat. That somehow, in spite of all evidence, the Republicans represent the rightful government of the United States and that all Democrats are usurpers who stole power in a coup d’etat. Therefore, in her mind, anything goes in an effort to regain control of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
This dovetails perfectly with the Birther movement. The Birthers also believe that “the uppity [insert racial slur]” occupying the White House is an unconstitutional interloper for the crime of winning an election while being a black liberal moderate. In the utopia envisioned by both Malkin and the Birthers, Democrats would be legally barred from holding elected office.
This sort of rhetoric is not only nakedly partisan, but borders on eliminationist. It’s the sort of thing that leads to assassinations and civil wars. It’s dangerous, and if Malkin and the Birthers had any sense of propriety or shame, they’d put a stop to it post haste. But as we saw in the Chad Castagana case and the UC Santa Cruz case, that ain’t happening any time soon.
And so, we inch ever closer to midnight on the Civil War 2.0 clock.
