Quote of the Day: 09/02/2009

JJ, in her own comments section, on Professional Outrage Maven Bill Donohue’s predictable reaction to a recent episode of Penn & Teller’s Bullshit.

First, the setup:

Does Bill Dohohue have a side other than paranoid?

And now, the punchline:

Alison S — “Paranoid” is his good side. “Psychotic incontinent screaming red rage” is the other side. It’s a toss-up as to which side is dominant.

“You’re so full of hate,” said the hater.

Life just isn’t fair to the Andrei Zhdanov of the Right, Brent Bozell. I mean, the very notion that at any given time someone in the media can disagree with him and still be gainfully employed afterward must really stick in his craw. It’s no wonder then, that he spent last Wednesday riding to the defense of the king of personal attacks, Rush Limbaugh. In his attempt to shield Limbaugh from any criticism whatsoever, he pointed to acerbic comments about Limbaugh from Ed Schultz, Ron Reagan, Jr., Jon Stewart and Mike Malloy as examples of how… wait for it… The LEFT™®© are solely responsible for the coarsening of our public discourse and that only The LEFT™®© could be so hateful.

No, seriously.

I have a feeling…

…that Bill Donohue is going to be rather busy the next few days trying to pretend that the Catholic church isn’t an institution rotten to the core because of pedophile priests and their enablers. Damn those homosexuals and their agenda of being treated like human beings!

AFTERSNARK: JJ’s final thoughts in the post linked above bear repeating:

If only all those abused kids hadn’t had the bad luck to have already made it out of the birth canal, maybe we might see some outrage from the church rank and file.

I couldn’t have said it better if I were the late, great George Carlin.

Because it isn’t manufactured outrage if Bill Donohue isn’t involved

Bill Dono-spew: Notre Dame giving Obama an honorary degree “would be like Howard University giving David Duke a degree in racial politics.”

I say: The International Council of Evangelical Churches giving Bill Donohue the Staines International Award For Religious Harmony — were that to happen — would be like the Nobel Foundation giving Adolf Hitler the Peace Prize.

WE’RE NOT DONE HERE: Bill, if you “don’t need people who are not Catholic sticking their noses where they don’t belong,” then why does your Pope feel the need to constantly stick his nose where it doesn’t belong (especially where criminal matters are concerned), particularly in non-Catholic countries?

Section 175 coming to Nigeria?

This is a goddamned travesty:

Nigerian Bill Defines Gay Roommates as “Married,” Inflicts Prison Penalty

Under a proposed new law in Nigeria, same-sex marriage would consist of gays simply living together—and would be punishable by three years in prison.

The law would extend new powers to the police to crack down on anyone thought to be gay, reported the BBC in an article posted online Mar. 11.

“The real threat of death or serious injury is not from legal actions by the state, but from mob violence and unofficial actions by the police who are a law unto themselves,” says [Changing Attitude Nigeria head] Davis Mac-Iyalla.

“In that way, there is very little difference between [the Muslim] North and [the Christian] South.”

Added Mac-Iyalla, “One of the few common perspectives between Islam and popular Christianity in Nigeria is a hatred of homosexuality.”

[…]

The shirts were distributed by the church the Daughters of Sarah. A member of the church, Ekaette Ettang, offered a standard disclaimer and rationale for the church’s support of the proposed legislation, saying, “We don’t hate gay people, but this is the public’s opinion and we have the right to speak.”

GLBT advocates, however, point out that anti-gay sentiment in Nigeria often involves violence against gay individuals. Even rumors of involvement in so-called “gay weddings” are enough to send people into hiding, while such “weddings” (which gay attendees say are simply parties) have led to mass arrests and headlines.

This is the sort of theocratic bullshit that the Christian Sharia Pimps want to bring to America. This is why they must be opposed at every turn.

I’m sure Bill “Gays Must Apologize for the Crime of Being Alive” Donohue will fill the cup when he finds out about this flagrant human rights violation. He hates gays that much.

Boa vinda a Gilead, Brasil.*

Sweet Zombie Jesus, save me from your followers:

RIO DE JANEIRO — A 9-year-old girl who was carrying twins, allegedly [ — Ed.] after being raped by her stepfather, underwent an abortion Wednesday despite complaints from Brazil’s Roman Catholic church.

Police said the stepfather has been jailed since last week.

Abortion is illegal in Brazil, but judges can make exceptions if the mother’s life is in danger or the fetus has no chance of survival.

Fatima Maia, director of the public university hospital where the abortion was performed, said the 15-week-old pregnancy posed a serious risk to the 80-pound girl.

“She is very small. Her uterus doesn’t have the ability to hold one, let alone two children,” Maia told the Jornal do Brasil newspaper.

And the details get worse when you read the BBC report on the case:

It is alleged that she had been sexually assaulted over a number of years by her stepfather.

[…]

Police believe that the girl at the centre of the case had been sexually abused by her step-father since she was six years old.

The fact that she was pregnant with twins was only discovered after she was taken to hospital in Pernambuco complaining of stomach pains.

[…]

He is also suspected of abusing the girl’s physically handicapped older sister who is now 14.

Three years. It took three whole years for the Catholic Church to deign to notice the horrors this girl’s step-father was inflicting on her on a regular basis. And the abuse started when she was six years old! And the bastard was diddling her crippled sister on the side!

So what did the all-knowing, all-wise, holier-than-thou Book of G’Quan Bible-thumpers do when they finally found out?

Rio de Janeiro — The Catholic Church on Thursday excommunicated the mother of a 9-year-old girl who had an abortion after being raped by her stepfather. Brazilian Archbishop Jose Gomes Sobrinho also excommunicated the doctors who performed the procedure ending the girl’s pregnancy with twins.

[…]

According to the head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife in northeastern Brazil, all the people involved in the termination of the pregnancy on Wednesday, had committed “a serious crime,” more specifically “homicide against two innocent lives.”

The religious leader said the sanction also applies to members of feminist organizations that supported the abortion, and only excludes the girl herself.

[…]

The archdiocese said it declined to file suit against the girl’s mother. This decision was reportedly due to the fact that its lawyers considered it unlikely that such a complaint would be successful.

That’s right. They tried to pursue legal avenues to stop the abortion from going forward, an when they realized they’d likely be laughed out of court, they went and damned the mother and the doctors to hell. Oh, and any feminists who may have been involved in the decision. (Gotta include those Feminazis. You can’t have a good religiously motivated riot without a witch- feminist-burning!) And the only reason the 9-year-old was spared having eternal damnation added to her heavy trauma baggage was that she was “too young” (read: too stupid) to be forced to bear the consequences of her “actions.” But beyond that? Fuck her.** She’s just an ambulatory incubator to the Church. Never mind that neither she nor the fetuses were likely to survive had the pregancy gone much longer than 16 weeks. <Catholic Church>If she didn’t want to become pregnant, she wouldn’t have let Step-Daddy violate her every day for three years, the little slut! Besides, we’ve got to get busy breeding if we don’t want to fall behind the [insert anti-Arab racial slur here]! We’ve got to be ready for Crusades v. 10.0!</Catholic Church>

The scumbag step-father who did it to her? If there were any justice in this world, he’d be repeatedly sodomized by his own dick (without lube), just to see how HE liked it. Unfortunately, we don’t live in such a world. As far as the Brazilian branch of the Catholic Church is concerned, not only does he get off scot-free, but I’m sure he’s got a bright future ahead of him in the clergy.

And you wonder why I no longer wish to associate with organized religion in any form.

It’s official: the Catholic Church is the original al-Qaeda.

Note to Bill Donohue: If you’re quite done libeling Governor Sibelius, you might want to direct your attention to this story. And if you ever feel compelled to harangue me about how your God and your God alone is a God of love simply because of the “quality” of His followers, I will hit you over the head with this story (and others like it) so hard that you’ll shit out your own eyeballs!

Oy. I can see I’m going to need another Mental Health Break™ soon.

* According to Babelfish, that’s how you say “Welcome to Gilead, Brazil” in Portuguese. If any of you speak Portuguese, feel free to upbraid me in the comments for any Babelfish-induced errors.

** Okay, poor choice of words. But that is essentially the sentiment being expressed by the Catholic Church in this case.

Tell me again about “The Angry Left(TM)”…

Spain’s Ted Haggard meets Spain’s Matthew Shepard. Violence ensues, and the perp gets off with Spain’s Twinkie Defense.

I’m sure that Bill “Gays Must Apologize for Merely Living” Donohue will get a massive stiffy when he reads about this horrendous hate crime. Because that’s how he rolls.

When Theocratic Thugs Issue Press Releases

Bill Dono-spew gets in on the Battle of Olympia in the War on Non-Christians (via Ed Brayton):

The First Amendment right to freedom of speech has always been conditioned on time, place and manner. That is why gays who sought to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Boston and New York—for the purpose of countering the message of the parade—lost in the courts in the 1990s. In the Boston case, Justice David Souter, writing for a unanimous court, said, ‘The speaker has the right to tailor the speech’ and the law ‘is not free to interfere with speech for no better reason than promoting an approved message or discouraging a disfavored one.’

Ummm…Bill? Care for a little trip down history lane?

There used to be a tradition in this country that said “I may not like what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” That’s the spirit that I was raised to believe in, and one of the things that made me proud to be an American. It’s why we allow neo-Nazis to publicly display their stupidity and regressive extremism — not because we agree with their views, but because we believe in a marketplace of free ideas where We The People™ can be trusted to determine for ourselves which speech is intellectually and morally acceptable and which is repugnant and deserving of ridicule or protest. But that just won’t do for people who think as Bill Donohue does.

S’aright? S’aright.

One more thought before I close out this post:

Gov. Gregoire is responsible for this mess. Having first acceded to the requests of atheists to attack Christmas, she is now confronted with the likes of the Westboro Baptist Church, a viciously anti-American, anti-Catholic and anti-gay group. There is a way to deal with this situation in a manner that is legally acceptable and morally defensible, but neither the Washington governor, nor her lawyers, have figured it out.

Yes, the delicious irony in the likes of Bill “Gays Must Apologize For Merely Existing” Donohue complaining about anti-gay bigotry is readily apparent to anyone whose name is not “Bill Donohue.”

That’s as bad as calling the “War on Terror” a “Crusade”

Although I can theoretically support something like this:

Activists urge people to ‘call in gay’ as protest
Effort to show country’s reliance on gays and lesbians in the work force

I have two quibbles of a logistical nature with this particular protest. First of all, with the economy in the toilet, it’s going to be very difficult to measure the impact of this kind of protest — not that that should dissuade anyone who wants to from participating.

My second quibble is more personal, and it is this: would it have killed the protest organizers to come up with a better name than “Day Without A Gay?” I mean, sure it’s a nod to the earlier Latino immigrant rallies, but given the reaction certain wingnuts have to merely the existence of homosexuals, much less their petitioning the government for equal protection under the law, I can’t help but worry that this will cause them to say “Hey, a day without gays? Great idea! How ‘bout a year? How ‘bout we make that year mandatory, say with a constitutional amendment? I mean, it’s not like it’s without precedent in human history! H’yuck! H’yuck!”

And then we’d get the modern day version of this:

But that’s just me.
